Supervisory & Leadership Skills for Human Service Managers

There are key factors responsible for the success of effective managers and supervisors.  The most important elements have been combined into a practical seminar, which delivers on-the-job results.  Managers will obtain basic skills necessary to ensure greater productivity and efficiency, learning to supervise effectively and motivate employees.

Many supervisors have been promoted from within their organization and have had little or no formal supervisory training.  Often they are caught in the middle between line staff and management.  Many find themselves supervising former co-workers.  Others recognize their need to become more effective supervisors but do not know how to change.  This seminar will address these issues.

The ability to successfully lead, supervise, and motivate others involves planned action.  Assessing personal strengths and identifying blocks to effective leadership are the first steps toward enhanced leadership.  In this workshop, you will assess and build on your own leadership strengths and acquire skills for managing conflict based on your own leadership style.  Develop action plans to handle challenges such as hostile, disruptive staff; withdrawn, passive staff; staff who “go around” you, and staff who are friends.  Through this workshop, you will learn how to:

  • Communicate with greater accuracy and clarity, as well as identify common pitfalls to communicating accurately
  • Deal with supervisees in ways that allow them to motivate themselves more effectively
  • Recognize the need for openly held information to drive the effectiveness of communication and fact-based decision making
  • Vary your communication style to successfully manage the different situations that you confront
  • Fine tune your leadership style to meet the different needs of supervisees

Workshop format includes, lecture, discussion, and numerous case examples. To make training relevant, participants should come prepared to discuss current supervisory issues.
